How can pattern makers use CLO3D beyond garment simulation?

CLO3D can be useful for much more than visualising a finished garment. For pattern makers, it brings together 2D pattern development and 3D simulation, allowing patterns to be drafted, checked, adjusted and reviewed within the same working environment.

In this video, I look at ten areas where CLO3D can support a pattern-making workflow, from building blocks and checking seam relationships through to fit review, grading and preparing pattern information for physical production.

The aim is not to replace pattern-cutting knowledge. The software becomes most useful when that knowledge is combined with the ability to test and interrogate the pattern digitally.

What I cover in the video

  1. Create pattern blocks – Develop blocks and pattern shapes directly within CLO3D.
  2. Work with customised avatars – Review garments against avatars that better reflect the body measurements you are developing for.
  3. Create digital prototypes – Simulate patterns in 3D to review shape, proportion and construction before physical sampling.
  4. Apply fabric properties – Explore how different material settings affect the way a garment behaves in simulation.
  5. Walk patterns – Compare pattern edges and check seam relationships before sewing. CLO’s Walk Pattern tool remains available specifically for comparing the lengths of pattern segments.
  6. Review fit – Use the 3D garment and fit-analysis tools as additional information when assessing a pattern.
  7. Review movement – Test how the garment behaves on posed or moving avatars where appropriate.
  8. Add and edit grading – Develop multiple sizes within the same pattern file.
  9. Review grading across sizes – Examine how pattern shapes and garment proportions change through the size range.
  10. Prepare patterns for production – Add information such as seam allowances and notches and prepare patterns for plotting or further manufacturing workflows. CLO continues to support seam allowances, notches and pattern plotting in current versions.

Version note: This video was recorded in December 2024. Most of the core pattern-making workflows shown remain relevant, but CLO has continued to develop its grading and production tools. In CLO 2026.0, for example, a separate 2D Grading Review was introduced, allowing graded patterns, graphic placements and dimensions to be compared side by side.

Using a newer CLO3D version? I’ve also created a quick tutorial on the newer CLO3D 2D Grading Review, which lets you inspect pattern changes across the size range side by side.

Want to explore one of these pattern workflows in more detail? My How to Cut Patterns in CLO3D tutorial shows how to reshape patterns using Internal Lines, Cut or Cut & Sew, and StyleLines drawn directly on the 3D garment.
