Can you create a custom avatar face in CLO3D from an image?

CLO3D’s AI tools can be used to change the appearance of an avatar within a rendered image, including generating a face from a prompt or working from your own reference image.

In this tutorial, recorded in CLO3D 2024.2, I explore the AI Avatar Studio workflow available at the time. I show how to prepare the render, access the AI tools, generate a face using prompts and upload your own image to create a more personalised visual result.

It is particularly useful for fashion presentation and visualisation when you want the model shown in your final imagery to feel more specific to a brand, customer or creative direction.

What I cover in the tutorial

  • Preparing your CLO3D avatar and render
  • Accessing the AI Avatar Studio
  • Using CLO’s AI prompt generator
  • Writing your own prompts
  • What to consider when describing the face you want
  • Applying the generated image to your render
  • Reviewing the AI-generated result
  • Saving the finished image
  • Uploading your own image to use as the avatar face

What is actually being changed?

Although the result can make the avatar look much more personalised, this workflow is primarily changing the visual appearance of the rendered image. It is not creating a new body shape or changing the underlying avatar measurements used to assess garment fit.

That distinction is important if you are using CLO3D for technical product development. A more realistic or personalised face can improve presentation, but it does not change the fit evidence provided by the underlying 3D avatar and garment simulation.

Version note: This tutorial was recorded in CLO3D 2024.2 and shows the AI Avatar Studio available at that time. CLO has since integrated its AI features into the wider AI Studio, and AI features from CLO 2025.0 and earlier were discontinued in 2025. The current AI Render workflow still includes face compositing, but the interface and process now differ from the one shown in this video.
